Mitch Clark earned All-SoCon First Team honors

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford College had nine players named to the Coaches All-Southern Conference Team as announced by the conference on Tuesday. The Terriers had three players earn first-team honors, while six players earned spots on the second team.
Terriers on the first team are running back Dane Romero, offensive lineman Derek Wooten and defensive lineman Mitch Clark. On the second team are offensive lineman Ben Quick, offensive lineman Ben Miller, wide receiver Andy Strickland, defensive lineman Layton Baker, defensive back Mychael Johnson and defensive back Jason Leventis.
Dane Romero, a senior from West Chester, Ohio, leads the Terriers with 991 yards on 185 carries. His 19 touchdowns are fourth-best in school history. His 114 points on the season are sixth in the country and first in the Southern Conference.
Derek Wooten, a senior from Rock Hill, S.C., has anchored an offensive line that has allowed only three sacks all season, best in the nation. The line has also blocked for the Terrier running game that is first in the conference and second in the nation. Wooten earned All-SoCon second team honors last season.
A senior from New Philadelphia, Ohio, Mitch Clark leads the team with eight sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss. He has a total of 27 tackles on the season. Clark’s tackles for loss total is third in the Southern Conference and his sack total is 20th in the nation.
Earning second team honors on the offensive line are senior Ben Quick and senior Ben Miller. Quick, from San Diego, California has started 24 career games at left tackle. Miller, from Cincinnati, Ohio, has started every game for the last two seasons at right guard.
Andy Strickland, a senior from Gaffney, S.C., leads the Terriers in receiving with 31 catches for 594 yards and seven touchdowns. He is currently fifth all-time in school history in receiving yards and third in receiving touchdowns. He is fifth in the SoCon in receiving yards per game this season.
Layton Baker, a senior from St. Augustine, Florida, has started every game this season at nose tackle. He has 20 tackles, a forced fumble, 4.0 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks on the season.
From the secondary, senior Jason Leventis and junior Mychael Johnson were honored. Leventis, from Greenville, S.C., has started every game this season at free safety. He is third on the team in tackles with 65 and scored a touchdown on an 82-yard interception return. Johnson, from Fayetteville, N.C., has started every game at cornerback. He has 39 total tackles, an interception and eight passes broken up.
In addition, freshman running back Eric Breitenstein earned a spot on the inaugural SoCon All-Freshman Team. Breitenstein is fifth on the team in rushing with 386 yards on 58 carries with two touchdowns. Georgia Southern led the conference with seven selections on the squad.
The nine selections for Wofford are the second most in school history. The Terriers had ten Coaches All-Conference selections in the 2003 season. Last season Wofford placed seven players on the all-conference teams.
League champion Appalachian State had 14 players selected to the all-conference team, including ten on the first team and four second-team picks. Wofford was second with nine selections, while Elon also had nine players honored. Furman had six players, while The Citadel and Georgia Southern each had five players named.
Other honors announced included Offensive Player of the Year Armanti Edwards (ASU), Defensive Player of the Year Jacque Roman (ASU), Freshman of the Year Dustin Taliaferro (SAM), Jerry Moore Coach of the Year (ASU) and Joel Bell (FUR) was the recipient of the Jacobs Blocking Trophy.
Wofford has reached the NCAA FCS Playoffs for the second straight season and third time in the last six years. Overall, the team has a 9-2 record and were 7-1 in the Southern Conference for a second-place finish. The Terriers will face top-ranked James Madison on Saturday at 3:00 pm in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
