SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men’s basketball team defeated UNC Asheville 74-69 in the home opener at Benjamin Johnson Arena on Tuesday night. The Terriers were led by Junior Salters with 20 points on the night.

Wofford is 3-2 overall and UNC Asheville is also 3-2 on the season. The Terriers were led by Junior Salters with 20 points, including five three-pointers. Brad Loesing, Jason Dawson and Noah Dahlman also scored in double figures, while Drew Crowell led the team with seven rebounds. Five Bulldogs scored in double-digits, led by Reid Augst with 15 points.

“We did not play our best basketball in defeating a quality, well coached team,” said head coach Mike Young. “We know that the road gets a lot tougher as we move along. I am really looking forward to this next ten days to practice and get better as a team.”

The Bulldogs had a slight lead for much of the first half. With UNC Asheville up 24-21 with 7:40 on the clock in the first half, Wofford went on a 9-0 run over three minutes to take a 30-24 lead. Included in the run were four points by Corey Godzinski and a three by Junior Salters.

UNC Asheville’s Reid Augst made a basket with 32 seconds left to cut the lead to 34-31 at the half. To open the second half, the Bulldogs took a 40-38 lead before a three-pointer by Jason Dawson regained the lead for the Terriers.

With 4:45 left in the game, Wofford was able to build a 60-51 lead after a basket by Tim Johnson. The lead was at seven at 66-59 before a quick 5-0 run over twenty seconds cut the lead to only two points with 2:00 on the clock.

Wofford went up by seven points again with 40 seconds remaining in the game, but again the lead was cut to two points after five quick points by the Bulldogs. Clutch free throws by Noah Dahlman and Brad Loseing in the final seconds of the game gave the Terriers the 74-69 victory.

Wofford shot 52.1% from the floor and 35.0% from three. The Terriers were 77.3% from the line. The Bulldogs shot 47.3% from the floor and 25.0% from behind the arc. UNC Asheville was 73.7% from the foul line. Wofford had a 30-26 advantage on the boards. Wofford had fifteen turnovers in the game, while UNC Asheville had eleven.

The Terriers will take the next ten days off before beginning Southern Conference action on December 6 against Appalachian State at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
