SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford College had seven players named to All-Southern Conference Teams by the Southern Conference Sports Media Association on Wednesday. The Terriers had four players earn first-team honors, while three players earned spots on the second team.
Terriers on the first team are running back Dane Romero, offensive lineman Derek Wooten, offensive lineman Ben Quick and defensive lineman Mitch Clark. On the second team are offensive lineman Ben Miller, linebacker Seth Goldwire and defensive back Jason Leventis.
Dane Romero, a senior from West Chester, Ohio, leads the Terriers with 991 yards on 185 carries. His 19 touchdowns are fourth-best in school history. His 114 points on the season are sixth in the country and first in the Southern Conference.
Derek Wooten, a senior from Rock Hill, S.C., and Ben Quick, a senior from San Diego, California were honored. They have anchored an offensive line that has allowed only three sacks all season, best in the nation. The line has also blocked for the Terrier running game that is first in the conference and second in the nation.
A senior from New Philadelphia, Ohio, Mitch Clark leads the team with eight sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss. He has a total of 27 tackles on the season. Clark’s tackles for loss total is third in the Southern Conference and his sack total is 20th in the nation.
Earning second team honors on the offensive line was senior Ben Miller. Miller, from Cincinnati, Ohio, has started every game for the last two seasons at right guard.
Seth Goldwire, a senior from Guyton, Georgia, leads the Terriers in tackles with 86 on the season. He has also added two interceptions, which leads the team, along with 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Goldwire was named Preseason All-Southern Conference by the coaches.
From the secondary, senior Jason Leventis, from Greenville, S.C., has started every game this season at free safety. He is third on the team in tackles with 65 and scored a touchdown on an 82-yard interception return.
League champion Appalachian State had 12 players selected to the all-conference team, including nine on the first team and three second-team picks. Furman was second with nine players, while Wofford and Elon each had seven selections. Samford had five players honored.
Other honors announced included Offensive Player of the Year Armanti Edwards (ASU), Defensive Player of the Year Chris Covington (GSU), Freshman of the Year Dustin Taliaferro (SAM), and Jerry Moore Coach of the Year (ASU).
Wofford has reached the NCAA FCS Playoffs for the second straight season and third time in the last six years. Overall, the team has a 9-2 record and were 7-1 in the Southern Conference for a second-place finish. The Terriers will face top-ranked James Madison on Saturday at 3:00 pm in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
