Sean Lees had the longest run of the day in the final practice
SPARTANBURG, SC – The Wofford College football team completed the 15-day spring practice schedule on Wednesday afternoon with a short scrimmage at Gibbs Stadium. The team went through 60 plays in about 45 minutes.

“There were good plays and bad plays out there today,” said head coach Mike Ayers. “We were not quite as crisp as I would have liked us to be, but I think the numbers have affected what we could do.

“Overall this spring we have made progress but there is still a long ways to go. We could only have 15 practices, and we went all 15 which gives us a good feel for the team heading into the fall. There was a lot of give and take as the veterans did a good job and it took a while for the younger guys to get up to speed at times. As coaches and players we have improved from a knowledge standpoint. There were specific things we wanted to look at and address this spring and we have definitely helped ourselves in that area.”

To open the scrimmage, Ben Widmyer had a pass caught by Fenn Allen for a first down and Sean Lees rushed for a first down. Travis Boyd ran for a first down, as did Dane Romero. The first team defense came up with several big plays, as Gary Blount and Hunter Hobson both had tackles for loss.

For the offense, Devin Reed had two first down completions from Mitch Allen. Gary Blount came up big again when he stopped a reverse in the backfield for a loss of five yards. Mike Rucker added a rushing first down, as did Jeremy Marshall.

With Ben Widmyer back under center, Dane Romero rushed for a 15-yard gain. Mitch Allen completed a 35-yard pass to Sean Lees for the longest play of the day. Mychael Johnson had the day’s first interception when he picked off a halfback pass in the endzone. Hunter Hobson had the other interception for the defense when he grabbed a pass deep in the secondary. The defense ended the day with a combined tackle for loss by Layton Baker and Anthony Naylor.

The Terriers were limited in personnel during the scrimmage. Thirteen players were either limited or held out of practice, including FB Arsenio Parks, LB Matt Norcia, LB Keaton Thompson, LB David Babb, LB Monier Abusaft, OL Ben Miller, OL Derek Wooten, WR Brian Mizelle, TE Johnson Richardson, TE Joseph Inman, DL Mitch Clark, DL Ryan Young and DL John Starr.

The Terriers will take part in the strength and conditioning program upon returning from spring break. The 2008 season begins on August 30 when Wofford hosts Presbyterian at Gibbs Stadium.
