SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Furman maintained its lead in the team standings and Presbyterian's Hugh Morrison was crowned the individual medalist via a scorecard playoff to garner the respective hardware following the conclusion of the 21st Annual Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational Tuesday at The Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C.
Furman, who held a three-shot lead over USC Upstate entering the final round, inched its winning margin to four strokes with an 8-over par 872 to claim its second Wofford Invitational title in five years. The Paladins also were victorious at the 2004 event and they join Clemson (1988, 1990), Wake Forest (1989, 1996), North Carolina State (1991, 1993), Virginia (1992, 1999) and Florida State (1994, 1995) as multiple time winners of the tournament.
The Paladins' Ben Goforth tied with Morrison for the individual low score of 6-under par 210 after 54 hole play on the par 72, 6,877-yard course. However, through a scorecard playoff which started with hole No. 15, Morrison was declared the winner after posting a par three to Goforth's bogey four on the hole.
Wofford's Garrett Medeiros finished as the top individual for the host Terriers, earning a fourth-place tie after carding a 1-under par 215 featuring a 2-under par 70 during final round action. He was one of two Wofford players to post a sub-par effort on the final 18, joining junior Drew Perry's 69.
The Terriers, who began the day in sixth place, climbed to fourth after only shooting one stroke higher than Furman's final round effort.
Wofford will not compete again until it joins Furman and the rest of the league at the Southern Conference Championship, April 20-22, at The Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C.
