FLORENCE, S.C. -- Junior Drew Perry used a solid opening nine holes to put himself in contention on the individual leaderboard and pace the Wofford men's golf team to an eighth-place finish after opening round play Sunday at the Southern Conference Championship at The Links at Stono Ferry in Florence, S.C.

Perry started the day with a 2-under par 34 before shooting a 39 for a 1-over par 73 and eighth-place tying finish. He is among seven players knotted four shots behind the leader, UNC Greensboro's Nathan Stamey who posted a 3-under par 69.

Teammate Garrett Medeiros also had a solid opening front nine with a 1-under par effort before ending the day at 2-over par 35-39--74 to tie for 15th. He was matched by sophomore classmate Mike McKenzie, who tallied a 39-35--74 (+2).

Senior John Gault, a late addition to the Terrier contingent, posted a 40-45--85 (+13), while freshman Rob Gorrell registered the same score with a 42-43--85 (+13). The pair are tied for 48th.

No. 12 Chattanooga holds a one-shot advantage in the team standings over Furman and College of Charleston. The Mocs are in the clubhouse with a 2-over par 290, while the Paladins and Cougars each notched a 291 (+3).

The three-day, 54-hole event on the par 72, 7,062-yard course will continue with 18 holes each Monday and Tuesday.
