Katie Hangstefer - action

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford athletics director Richard Johnson announced today the promotion of Katie Hangstefer to head women’s tennis coach. Hangstefer had joined the Terrier tennis staff in September 2007 as an assistant to head coach Rod Ray.

“Katie has come in and done a great job,” said Johnson. “She has past head coaching experience and did a great job working with the team this past year. We are thrilled to offer her this opportunity and look forward to building a long-term relationship with her in the position.”

Hangstefer primarily oversaw the women’s program during her first year with Wofford. She guided the Terriers to an 11-2 start and eventual opening round bye in the Southern Conference Tournament.

Senior Adriane Hodges was tabbed the league’s February Athlete of the Month, while the Wofford starting lineup featured a pair of freshmen.

“I’m very excited to have been named the head women’s tennis coach,” said Hangstefer. “It’s a great honor. I really enjoyed this past season working with the women’s team. They are a wonderful group of young ladies, and I look forward to the future with them.

“Wofford has been a remarkable place to work and I’m so thankful to have this opportunity.”

Hangstefer came to Wofford after serving as the men’s and women’s head tennis coach at Covenant College since December 2006. In its first year as a varsity sport in 2007, she led the women’s squad to a fifth-place Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) finish and berth in the AAC Tournament. The men’s team was still a club sport under her direction.

The Lady Scots received the 2007 AAC Champions of Character team award, an honor for actions on and off the court. The No. 1 singles player garnered Appalachian Athletic Conference accolades as well as a nomination for the AAC Sportsmanship Award. A freshman on the team also was recognized as an honorable mention all-conference performer. Three of Hangstefer’s players collected Academic All-Conference honors.

Hangstefer also served as the director of facilities and operations at Covenant, a post she assumed in February 2007.

The Chattanooga, Tenn., native worked in her hometown as a tennis instructor teaching beginning and intermediate level classes from August 2002-April 2003.

She graduated in 2002 from fellow Southern Conference school Chattanooga, where she received a business management double major with concentrations in general management and human resource management. While in college, she was an instructor at the McCallie tennis clinics and camps.
