CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 14-5 by UNC Greensboro in the second round of the Southern Conference Tournament on Wednesday at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in Charleston. The loss ends the season for the Terriers.

Wofford ends the season at 24-35 overall, while UNC Greensboro is 32-26 on the season and the #5 seed in the tournament. The Terriers were led by Michael Gilmartin with two home runs on the day.

The Spartans opened the game with a double by Sean Snell. He advanced to third on an error and was driven in on a sacrifice fly to center field by Ricky Orton for an early 1-0 lead. The Terriers countered in the bottom of the first with a single by Kyle Behrendt. Behrendt stole second and moved to third on a ground out by Michael Gilmartin. A single up the middle by Shane Kirkley scored a run to tie the game at 1-1 after the first.

Neither team scored in the second inning. In the top of the third, Matt Gaski doubled, which was followed by a walk to Ricky Orton. Greg Feltes added a single to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by Tim Carrier scored one run. Corey Overholtzer hit a single which added another run. With the bases loaded, Drew Gehringer walked to bring in a run for a 4-1 lead. A single by Ray Quinones scored one more run for a 5-1 lead at the end of three innings.

Michael Gilmartin led off the bottom of the fourth for Wofford with a solo home run over the left center fence. A walk, hit by pitch and single from Mo Seay loaded the bases, but a double play ended the inning with the Spartans holding a 5-2 lead.

In the top of the sixth, the Spartans had a single from Greg Feltes. Tim Carrier followed that with a home run down near the left foul pole for two runs. Corey Overholtzer had a single and was driven in with a single from Ray Quinones. Sean Snell added an RBI single to go up 9-2 in the middle of the sixth. Wofford added a run in the bottom of the sixth when Shane Kirkley walked and was driven in by a double from Jake Williams for a 9-3 game.

The Spartans added a run in the top of the seventh when Tim Carrier hit a sacrifice fly to score Matt Gaski for a 10-3 advantage. In the bottom of the eighth, Sterling Dye reached on a walk and Michael Gilmartin’s second home run of the game went over the scoreboard in left field for a 10-5 score.

In the top of the ninth, the bases were loaded when Greg Feltes hit a grand slam home run over the scoreboard for a 14-5 score. In the bottom of the ninth, the Terriers had one base runner but were unable to mount a rally.

Wofford starter Tom Dolinak went 2.2 innings with five hits, five runs and four strikeouts. Ben Austin entered the game in the third inning and went 3.1 innings with eight hits, four runs and six strikeouts. Chip Hunt threw two innings with four hits, four runs allowed and one strikeout. Michael Gilmartin pitched the ninth and allowed one hit and one run with two strikeouts.

For the Spartans, starter Rob Gilliam went seven innings with six hits and three runs allowed with one strikeout. Warren Slack threw 0.2 innings and gave up two hits and two runs. James White went 1.1 innings with three strikeouts and no hits.

Wofford baseball coach Todd Interdonato announced the addition of four student-athletes who will be joining the Terriers this fall. Mac Doyle signed a National Letter of Intent, while Mason Bradley, Bo Brandt and Bobby DeLuria will also be joining the team.
