MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 10-7 by the College of Charleston on Friday night at Patriots Point Field. The Terriers held a 6-3 lead in the middle of the seventh, but the Cougars responded with a total of seven runs in the seventh and eighth innings for the win.

Wofford is now 21-30 on the season and 4-18 in the Southern Conference, while the College of Charleston is 32-17 overall and 14-8 in conference play. The Terriers had five different players with two hits, while Shane Kirkley led the team with three RBIs.

The Terriers opened with a lead-off home run from Sterling Dye on the game’s first pitch. In the second inning, Jake Williams and Keith Munns singled. Passed balls allowed the runners to advance twice, with Williams scoring to give Wofford a 2-0 lead after two innings.

In the bottom of the third, Austin Morgan singled and then Michael Harrington hit a two-run homer to tie the game at 2-2. Wofford regained the lead in the top of the fifth. Kyle Behrendt began the inning with a single, then Michael Gilmartin was hit by a pitch. A single from Shane Kirkley scored one run, then a bunt single from Jake Williams added another run. Howver with runners at second and third with no out, the Terriers were unable to extend the lead past 4-2.

The Cougars got one run back in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run by Michael Harrington, his second of the game, for a 4-3 score. In the top of the sixth, Sterling Dye singled and Kyle Behrendt walked. A double from Shane Kirkley drove in both runners for a 6-3 advantage.

College of Charleston added a solo homer by Austin Morgan, then a single from Gabe Marchant drove in two runs to tie the game at 6-6. Wofford left two runners on base in the top of the eighth. In the bottom half of the eighth, Brandon Sizemore hit a three-run homer with two outs. An RBI double from Jeremie Tice gave the Cougars a 10-6 lead.

In the top of the ninth, Mo Seay singled and was driven in with a pinch-hit single from Neil Robinette. However the Terriers were unable to cut into the lead any further and the Cougars won with a 10-7 final.

Wofford starter Scott Summers went 6.2 innings with five hits, four runs and five strikeouts. For the first time this season, Ben Austin (4-6) entered the game from the bullpen. He pitched 1.1 innings with five runs on five hits with two strikeouts.

For the College of Charleston, starter Jake Goldberg went 4.0 innings with nine hits and four runs with two strikeouts. Mike Lynn threw 3.2 innings with four hits, two runs and five strikeouts. Danny Meszaros (4-3) went an inning with two hits, one run and two strikeouts, while Michael Kohn had the final strikeout.

The College of Charleston had four home runs on the night, giving them 102 on the season to lead the NCAA. Wofford out-hit the Cougars 15-10 for the game. Wofford left twelve runners on base, while College of Charleston stranded seven.

Due to impending weather on Sunday, Wofford and the College of Charleston will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 2:00 pm. The Terriers final home series will be Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17 against Appalachian State.

Wofford baseball coach Todd Interdonato announced the addition of four student-athletes who will be joining the Terriers this fall. Mac Doyle signed a National Letter of Intent, while Mason Bradley, Bo Brandt and Bobby DeLuria will also be joining the team.

The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 14-5 by UNC Greensboro in the second round of the Southern Conference Tournament on Wednesday in Charleston. The loss ends the season for the Terriers. The Terriers were led by Michael Gilmartin with two home runs on the day.
