SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Wofford head men's soccer coach Ralph Polson and the Terrier team have announced the 2008 schedule, highlighted by a home tournament and date with an ACC opponent at Snyder Field.
"We could not be more happy about the solid group of teams we have coming to Spartanburg this fall," said Polson. "Each home match will provide our fans an exciting opportunity to catch a top-notch opponent."
The Terriers will host a tournament for the fourth time in the past five seasons when they welcome USC Upstate, Georgia State and Furman to Snyder Field Sept. 19 and 21 for the Wofford/Nike Soccer Classic. The host Terriers will square off with USC Upstate and Georgia State during the two-day event, saving a matchup with league rival Furman for Oct. 18 at Snyder Field.
Wofford will also welcome Clemson to Spartanburg for a mid-week, Oct. 14 contest. The two teams have met eight times over the years with only two tilts in Spartanburg, the last coming Oct. 9, 2002, when the Tigers were ranked No. 9 nationally. Clemson held a No. 4 national ranking in the other meeting at Snyder Field, Sept. 6, 2000.
In addition to hosting its own tournament, the Terriers will hit the road Sept. 5 and 7 for Harrisonburg, Va., to participate in the JMU/Comfort Inn Harrisonburg Invitational. Wofford will face High Point and host James Madison.
The Terriers open the campaign Aug. 29 at Presbyterian, renewing a series which last saw the teams face each other during the 1994 campaign.
The home opener will be Aug. 31 against ETSU, a first-year program. Other dates in Spartanburg include Southern Conference matches with Appalachian State (Oct. 4), Georgia Southern (Oct. 25) and Davidson (Oct. 29).
The SoCon Tournament begins Nov. 8 with the opening round played at campus sites before moving to Davidson, N.C., for the semifinals and championship, Nov. 14 and 16.
