SPARTANBURG, SC – The Wofford College baseball team has had a busy summer, with many student-athletes playing in wooden bat leagues.
Kyle Behrendt was named to the Coastal Plains League All-Star Team earlier this week, with the game being held on July 22 in Asheboro, N.C. So far this season with Gastonia, he leads the team and is sixth in the league with a .350 batting average He has 41 hits and 18 RBIs in 33 games started.
Michael Gilmartin has played 13 games at shortstop for the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod League. He is hitting .261 with 12 hits and three runs scored, including a home run. The regular season on the Cape ends on August 7.
For the Outer Banks in the Coastal Plain League, John Cornely has a 2-1 record on the mound in eleven appearances. He has a 1.09 ERA with 20 strikeouts and only two walks allowed in 17.0 innings of work.
Also in the Coastal Plain League, Jordan Mickleberry has pitched 14.1 innings with an 8.15 ERA in seven appearances with Asheboro. Scott Summers made five appearances with three starts and an 8.31 ERA with Asheboro. Tom Dolinak has a 5.62 ERA in two starts with Outer Banks. The Coastal Plain League ends the regular season on August 5.
The Spartanburg Blue Eagles, who play their home games at Wofford, have several Terriers on the roster. Neil Robinett is hitting .250 in seven games played, as he missed several games due to injury. Reid McElveen has a 6.11 ERA and a 2-2 record in ten appearances with 17 strikeouts. Pete Noordsy had a 6.23 ERA in one appearance before his season was cut short due to injury. Mike McDonald is hitting .170 in twenty games played.
For the Asheville Redbirds, Alex Lee played in 24 games with a .250 batting average with 12 hits and seven RBIs. Also with Asheville, Carson Turner has a .250 batting average in two games played. Wofford assistant coach Anthony Dillenger has led the Morganton Aggies to a 19-18 record so far. The Southern Collegiate Baseball League ends the regular season next week.
Out in the Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League, Jake Williams has started 20 of 22 games in the outfield for the Kauai Menehunes. He is hitting .227 with 12 RBIs. Ryan Toniolo has started all 19 games played at third base for the Hawaii Aliis. He is hitting .195 with 15 hits and 10 RBIs. The league wraps up play next week.
In addition, Drew Sheridan and Josh McKinney have been playing in 18 and under leagues this summer in South Carolina and Tennessee, respectively.
