SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford volleyball team is entering its second week of preseason after reporting to campus on August 11. The team will continue its preseason routine leading up to its opening match of the 2008 season against South Dakota in the Tiny Lester Memorial Tournament on August 29 in Hampton, Va.
“We’ve had a great first week,” said head coach Corey Helle. Each player has been working extremely hard to get better fit and prepared for the season. The attitude has been terrific and as a team we have worked incredibly hard and the player’s have responded well.”
The team has had two-a-day practices, while mixing in weight lifting and conditioning as well as enjoying team meals and inspirational movies. The Terriers have constantly been together in efforts to help build chemistry. “The chemistry is good; it seems like everyone is focused on the program and the team, which has unified us even more.”
With no newcomers to this year’s squad and all starters returning, Coach Helle wanted to push his squad in the opening week. “We have all our starters returning plus some great depth so we wanted to make it the toughest first week we’ve ever had. We feel if we change our culture, we will be able to change some other things.” The team will continue to work and focus on individual and team drills to get better at its system.
Wofford will participate in its first match action of the year as it welcomes back former team members to participate in the annual alumni game. “We are looking forward to playing this Saturday night against some of our alumni. It will be a good measuring stick for where we are at so far.”
The Terriers will open their home slate on September 3 against Southern Wesleyan at 6 p.m. in the Benjamin Johnson Arena.
