In a partnership between Wofford Sports Marketing and Wofford Campus Ministry, Terrier alumni, fans and area business leaders now have an opportunity to give those less fortunate the chance to enjoy a college football atmosphere.
"The First Down" is a program whereby individuals or corporations can send a group of 10 or more to see a Wofford College football game. For a minimum $100 donation, nine children and one chaperone will be given general admission tickets and a Wofford t-shirt to one of three selected games. Those who wish to make a larger donation, may do so in increments of five ($150 = 15 person group, etc.).
This is similar to a ticket donation program employed for last year's NCAA FCS playoff game against Richmond where nearly 500 area youth got to experience the excitement of college football.
In 2008, the program will be in place for three of Wofford's five home games: August 30 vs. Presbyterian, October 11 vs. Chattanooga and November 8 vs. The Citadel. The latter of these two contests will be televised as part of "SoCon Saturday on SportSouth."
“The First Down program gives many youngsters their first exposure to a college campus and encourages them as they move ahead in life. We hope that college will become a place these young people will want to visit again and again, and that their time at the game will inspire them to set their sights on attending college in the future,” said Perkins-Prothro chaplain and professor of religion Ron Robinson.
"Everyone was really touched by the number of kids who shared in the experience of the playoff game last year. This is a great opportunity for fans, alumni or even the local corporate community who can't make it Gibbs Stadium for themselves, know that they are helping a child experience an event they would not have the chance to otherwise," said assistant athletic director for marketing and promotions Lenny Mathis.
