The marketing and promotions newsletter of Wofford College Athletics

NUMBER OF THE WEEK: 18:49
See below for details.

2009 Men's Basketball
BASKETBALL: Terrier Tip-off Party slated for next Friday!
Wofford students and fans will have the opportunity to get a first look at the 2009-10 Terrier men’s and women’s basketball teams at the “Terrier Tip-off Party” on Friday, October 16 inside the Benjamin Johnson Arena.  Admission is free, open to the public and the event is slated for 8:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The “Tip-off Party” will be tied into the Terrier Club’s Letterman’s Weekend festivities.  The event will include special exhibitions by former Terrier men’s and women’s basketball players, a performance by the Wofford cheerleaders, a three-point shooting contest featuring members from the current Wofford squads, 10-minute exhibition games by both the men’s and women’s basketball teams plus a special co-ed scrimmage with members of both the Terrier men’s and women’s teams playing together.

In addition, all fans 17 and older will be issued a ticket upon entering the building.  Three lucky fans will have their ticket number called to participate in an on-court shooting contest for a huge prize to be announced soon.

The concept behind the “Tip-off Party” is to provide students and fans an opportunity to see the basketball teams in a fun, laid-back atmosphere similar to “midnight madness.” From a promotions standpoint, this will be unlike a normal game night – essentially, everything the rules won’t allow at a basketball game.  Look for music during play, promotional items tossed into the stands during play and other surprises.

More details on the Terrier Tip-off Party will be announced next week.

VOLLEYBALL: Terriers host UNCG Sunday, $1.00 admission
The Wofford volleyball team hosts UNC Greensboro Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. inside the Benjamin Johnson Arena in a key Southern Conference match.  Admission is only $1.00 and at the intermission fans will have the chance to serve on the court for a free Wofford volleyball t-shirt!  The volleyball team will not host another contest until Saturday, October 24, which will be Girl Scouts Sports Day and the team's "Dig Pink" event.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Schedule changes announced; next home match now Oct. 22
The Wofford women's soccer team has announced a change in the schedule for an upcoming match at Snyder Field.  The match vs. Applachian State originally planned for Oct. 23 will now be Oct. 22 at 6:00 pm.  Off back-to-back victories over The Citadel and Chattanooga (with the winning goal hitting the back of the net with 47 seconds remaining) the Terriers are off to Samford, Davidson and Georgia Southern before returning home for the aforementioned match against ASU.

FOOTBALL: Terriers with the open date this Saturday; host ASU Oct. 17
The Wofford football team gets the weekend of October 10 off before hosting Appalachian State, Saturday, October 17 for a special 3:00 p.m. kickoff at Gibbs Stadium.  The game will be televised as part of "SoCon Saturday" on SportSouth.  For complete details including ticket information click the Football Gameday icon here.

BASEBALL: Terriers to visit Carolina Miracle League on Tuesday
The Wofford baseball team will visit the Carolina Miracle League on Tuesday, October 13 at Miracle Park in Boiling Springs.  The CML is a baseball league for kids with disabilities and the Terriers will serve as buddies to the over 60 participants in the league.  There will be two one-hour games beginning at 6:00 p.m. For more, log onto www.carolinamiracleleague.com.

THE FIRST DOWN: Give area youth the chance to see a college football game
In a partnership between Wofford Sports Marketing and Wofford Campus Ministry, Terrier alumni, fans and area business leaders will again have an opportunity to give those less fortunate the chance to enjoy a college football atmosphere.

“The First Down program gives many youngsters their first exposure to a college campus and encourages them as they move ahead in life. We hope that College will become a place these young people will want to visit again and again, and that their time at the game will inspire them to set their sights on attending college in the future,” said Perkins-Prothro chaplain and professor of religion Ron Robinson.

"The 1st Down" is a program whereby individuals or corporations can send a group of 10 or more to see a Wofford football game.  For a minimum $100 donation, nine children and one chaperone will be given general admission tickets and a Wofford t-shirt.  Those who wish to make a larger donation, may do so in increments of five ($150 = 15 person group, etc.).

To participate in The 1st Down program by making a $100 donation or more, call Wofford Campus Ministry at (864) 597-4050.

TERRIER TALES: Program gives children incentive to read for enjoyment

The Wofford College athletic department and Spartanburg County Public Libraries have teamed up again in 2009 to continue a special reading program, “Terrier Tales”, for elementary school children throughout Spartanburg County. The program is designed to reward children for reading during the school year.  Children who complete the program receive a free ticket to any home Wofford football game and all men's and women's home basketball games this season (based on ticket availability).

To participate, children check out a book at any of the ten SCPL locations.  Upon completing the book, the child returns to the branch with their bookmark to have it stamped by the librarian.  Once your child completes five books and receives five stamps, the bookmark becomes a free ticket to any home Wofford football or basketball game (based on ticket availability).  Wofford will mail a new bookmark to your child once it is turned in at the game and the process continues throughout the basketball season.

Wofford College Athletics will award $250 to the school with the highest participation (bookmarks returned at athletic events).  The award will come with a visit from staff, coaches and student-athletes from Wofford in the spring.  The child with the highest participation will get to throw out a ceremonial first pitch at a 2010 baseball game and receive a Terrier prize pack.

Thanks to the Spartanburg County Public Libraries and all seven school districts in Spartanburg County for making this program possible.  Please contact Wofford Sports Marketing at 864-597-4090.
