SAPPHIRE, N.C. – The Wofford men’s golf team concluded the fall portion of its 2009-10 season, capturing a tie for ninth place at the 2009 Hummingbirg Intercollegiate, hosted by Western Carolina University at the par-71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley.

The Terriers finished tied for ninth in the 18-team field, the largest in tournament history, which included five teams ranked in the GolfState top-100 rankings: No. 30 Chattanooga, No. 53 Vanderbilt, No. 62 Furman, No. 89 Wofford and No. 92 East Carolina.

Wofford recorded team scores of 292 and 288 in the 36-hole tournament for a total score of 580 (+12). The Terriers finished ahead of Southern Conference foes Samford, College of Charleston and Appalachian State, while tying with Elon and finishing a mere two strokes behind No. 30 Chattanooga.

Senior Garrett Medeiros paced the Terriers, finishing tied for fourth place with a total score of 139 (-3). After shooting an opening round 74 (+3), leaving him tied for 51st at the conclusion of the first day, Medeiros recorded seven Birdies and an Eagle on the 12th hole to catapult into the top ten on the strength of a six-under par 65 round. The career-best mark also puts Medeiros at the top of the Terrier record books, tied for first in Division I Individual Low 18 records.

Freshman Mark Joye led the team in the first round, shooting an even-par 71, and after carding a 73 in the second round, finished the tournament tied for 28th place with a total score of 144.

Also turning in scores for the Terriers was senior Mike McKenzie, who finished tied for 54th with a score of 149 (74-75). Junior Adam Dolezal, competing in his first tournament for the Terriers this fall, finished in a tie for 87th place after recording scores of 79 and 75 for a 154 total (+12). Freshman Charles Moore came in at 14-over par 156, to finish tied for 94th.

The Terriers will kick off their spring season with a trip to Hilton Head, S.C. to compete in the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate, February 22-23.
