SPARTANBURG, SC – Wofford College football coach Mike Ayers announced on Wednesday the signing of 21 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the upcoming season.

The Terriers will welcome fourteen players on defense, six players on offense and one specialist. The student-athletes are from seven different states, including seven from South Carolina, four from Georgia and three from Ohio.

On defense, the fourteen players include three defensive linemen, six linebackers and five defensive backs. On offense, the seven players include two offensive linemen, one running back, one wide receiver, one tight end and one quarterback. Also included is one kicker/punter.

“We are very pleased with this year’s class of players,” said head coach Mike Ayers. “I think this is our fastest class in terms of athleticism and speed. Overall the needs that we had identified have been met by this group. We feel good about all the guys and their approach to the classroom and to football.”

The defensive line welcomes Josh Hillard (Delaware, Ohio), Zach Murray (Avon Lake, Ohio), and Josh Roseborough (Jenkinsville, S.C.). Linebackers are Anthony Carden (Lexington, S.C.), Mark Flott (Statesboro, Ga.), Phillip LeGrande (Rockingham, N.C.), James Robinson (Laurinburg, N.C.), Alvin Scioneaux (Garyville, La.), and SeQuan Stanley (Darien, Ga.). In the secondary, Jamar Reeves (Mulberry, Fla.), Stephon Shelton (Atlanta, Ga.), Charles Turner (Chester, S.C.), Rob Williams (Kingsland, Ga.) and Blake Wylie (Fort Mill, S.C.) will join the Terriers.

On offense, the linemen are Tymeco Gregory (Greer, S.C.) and Jared Singleton (Lugoff, S.C.). At quarterback, Brian Kass (Raleigh, N.C.) joins the Terriers, while Kenny Barnes (Suwanee, Ga.) comes on board at tight end. Included in the backs and receivers are Cody Burris (Plain City, Ohio) and Thomas Simmons (Greer, S.C.). The kicker/punter is Christian Reed (Hendersonville, Tenn.).

In addition, the Terriers had two other players join the team this January. Clark Gaston is a sophomore defensive lineman who transferred to Wofford from South Carolina. Aaron Seigler is a freshman quarterback from Jacksonville, Florida.

Last season the Terriers were 9-3 and advanced to the FCS Playoffs for the second straight season. In 2009, they will open the season September 5 at South Florida. A full schedule will be released later in February. Spring practice will begin for the Terriers on March 2.

The eligibility of all student-athletes is contingent upon admission to Wofford College and compliance with all NCAA rules, including registration with the NCAA Clearinghouse.

2009 Newcomer Bios
Kenny Barnes (TE, 6-2, 215, Suwanee, Ga./North Gwinett) started 28 career games at tight end for North Gwinnett High School with a 23-5 overall record. He was team captain his senior season with 27 catches for 398 yards and three touchdowns. Played in the Gwinnett All-Star game as a senior and earned all-county honors. During his junior season had 23 catches for 248 yards as his team reached the state championship game for the first time in school history.

Cody Burris
(RB, 6-0, 190, Plain City, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) was a four-year letterman in football and track at Dublin Jerome High School. As a senior he was named first team all-conference and second-team all-district as he had 184 rushing yards and 619 receiving yards in only five games. Set a school single-game record with 208 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns. In track, holds school records in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 4x100 relay and 4x200 relay.

Anthony Carden
(LB, 6-0, 210, Lexington, S.C./Lexington) earned all-region honors three years at running back for Lexington High School. As a senior had 306 rushing attempts for 1,711 yards and 25 touchdowns as he was named all-state and all-area. Named offensive MVP of the North-South game and named 4A Player of the Year by The State. Started 40 games in his career and is the second-leading rusher in school history. Also plays baseball and wrestled.

Mark Flott (LB, 6-0, 205, Statesboro, Ga./Emanuel County Institute) was named all-state as a senior at Emanuel County Institute. The team won the 2007 state championship and had a stretch of 29 straight wins. As a senior he had 14 tackles for loss at linebacker and also was the kicker. He was named region Defensive Player of the Year. His brother, Ron, played football at Wofford in 2006 and 2007.

Clark Gaston (DE, 6-2, 244, Cleveland, Tenn./South Carolina) transferred from the University of South Carolina and will be a junior in the fall. Played one game each in 2008 and 2007 for the Gamecocks. He graduated from Ooltewah High School in December 2005 and was considered one of the top fullbacks in the nation with 54 carries for 233 yards and seven touchdowns as a senior. Also played on the defensive line, making 3.5 sacks, 5.0 tackles for loss and 28 tackles. He earned all-region and all-area honors as a junior and senior.

Tymeco Gregory
(OL, 6-2, 293, Greer, S.C./Greer) was named all-state and selected to the North-South All-Star game. He had 91 knockdown blocks as a senior along with 78 knockdowns during his junior season. Also earned all-region honors as he graded out at 88% on the offensive line.

Josh Hillard (DL, 6-3, 260, Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy) is a three-year letterman for Olentangy High School where he played tight end and defensive tackle. As a senior had five sacks, twelve tackles for loss and a fumble recovery as he earned second team all-conference and honorable mention all-district honors. Named team’s defensive MVP. He also participated in track and field.

Brian Kass (QB, 6-0, 205, Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) lettered three seasons at quarterback and punter for Millbrook High School. He earned all-league and all-conference honors as both a junior and senior. In the last two seasons, he had 34 rushing touchdowns and 37 passing touchdowns. He is the second-leading passer in school history (4,778 yards) and is also second on the career quarterback rushing list (1,651 yards). As a senior, he directed the offense to 44.2 points per game, a school record. At punter, he averaged 41 yards per punt as a senior and 47 yards per punt as a junior. He also is a three-year letterman in baseball. His brother, Rob, plays quarterback at East Carolina.

Phillip LeGrande
(LB, 6-0, 195, Rockingham, N.C./Richmond Senior) was named defensive MVP of the 2008 state championship game. As a senior he had 122 tackles in 16 games played and he had 108 tackles in 14 games as a junior. He earned all-conference honors. He was a regional qualifier in track in 2007 and 2008.

Zach Murray
(DL, 6-2, 230, Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) is a three-year letterman for Avon Lake High School on the defensive line. As a senior, he was named all-conference, all-county and second team all-district. In seven games, he had 65 tackles, six tackles for loss, eight sacks and one forced fumble. During his junior season, he was all-conference and first team all-county with 47 tackles, six tackles for loss, twelve sacks and two fumble recoveries. Was named one of the top 40 players in northeast Ohio by the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Jamar Reaves (CB, 6-0, 180, Mulberry, Fla./Mulberry) is a three-year letterman for Mulberry High School at wide receiver and also played running back, free safety, cornerback and returned kicks. As a senior had 33 receptions for 585 yards and six touchdowns, 20 carries for 150 yards and two touchdowns, and one interception to be named an all-county defensive player. Earned all-county honorable mention honors as a junior with 33 carries for 665 yards and seven touchdowns along with 15 receptions for 123 yards and two interceptions.

Christian Reed
(K/P, 6-0, 170, Hendersonville, Tenn./Station Camp) holds all the kicking records at Station Camp High School, where he was a four-year letterman. Last season he was 39-40 on PATs, 7-12 on field goals with a long of 47 yards and averaged 41.4 yard per punt with a long of 56 yards. He was named all-region, all-state and preseason all-state at punter during his senior season. In addition, he played two seasons of soccer.

James Robinson
(LB, 6-2, 227, Laurinburg, N.C./Scotland County) is a two-year letterman in football and basketball at Scotland County High School. At linebacker, he was named all-conference twice and as a senior led the team in tackles. He was named the team’s most outstanding linebacker and the defensive MVP. In basketball, he is a two-time all-conference honoree and is averaging a double-double this season.

Josh Roseborough (DL, 6-2, 215, Jenkinsville, S.C./Fairfield Central) was a first team all-state and all-region selection at defensive end for Fairfield Central High School. He was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl after a senior season with 85.5 tackles, 14.5 sacks, eleven tackles for loss, six forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. Holds school records for career sacks (40.5) and sacks in a game with four in three seasons as a starter. Also played tight end and power forward on the basketball team.

Alvin Scioneaux (LB, 6-2, 210, Garyville, La./East St. John) is a three-year letterman at outside linebacker and tight end for East St. John High School. He was named first-team all-area as a senior.

Aaron Seigler
(QB, 6-2, 175, Jacksonville, Fla./Edward White) enrolled at Wofford in January. He was a four-year letterman at quarterback for Edward White High School in Jacksonville where he earned team MVP honors. Also played baseball, earning all-conference honors at centerfield.

Stephon Shelton
(CB, 5-9, 173, Atlanta, Ga./The Westminster Schools) earned four letters in football at The Westminster Schools. He saw time on the field at cornerback, wide receiver, running back and as a kick returner as he was named team MVP. Earned first team All-State honorable mention honors and played in the Georgia North-South All-Star game. Also honored as the Northside Area Player of the Year and received all-area honors.

Thomas Simmons
(WR, 5-11, 175, Greer, S.C./Greer) enrolled at Wofford in February. He was a three-year starter at wide receiver and two-year starter at cornerback for Greer High School as they won two conference championships. Career stats include 49 receptions for 750 yards, 700 kickoff return yards, and 350 punt return yards along with five interceptions and 48 tackles. Also ran track for two years, earning all-region and all-county honors in the 100 and 200.

Jared Singleton
(OL, 6-2, 330, Lugoff, S.C./Lugoff-Elgin) was a four-time all-region selection for Lugoff-Elgin High School. As a senior, he was named all-state as the team posted a 9-4 record. He also started in the 2008 Shrine Bowl at center and was named offensive lineman of the year by the Chronicle Independent. He was part of an offensive line that blocked for two 1,000 yard rushers in 2008 for the first time in school history.

SeQuan Stanley (LB, 5-8, 205, Darien, Ga./McIntosh County Academy) was a three-year letterman at linebacker and fullback for McIntosh County Academy. As a senior, named Region 2AA Defensive Player of the Year along with all-state honorable mention recognition. Earned all-region first team honors and Coastal Georgia all-area first team honors in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Career statistics include 334 tackles, three touchdowns, 14 sacks, 27 tackles for loss, seven forced fumbles and two blocked punts. Also ran track.

Charles Turner
(CB, 5-11, 160, Chester, S.C./Chester) is a three-year letterman at Chester Senior High School. As a senior, he was named all-region and played in the North-South All-Star game. Posted 67 tackles with four interceptions and a fumble recovery as the team won two Upper State Championships. Also ran track and cross country, earning all-region honors in track as the team was second in the state.

Rob Williams
(DB, 5-11, 176, Kingsland, Ga./Camden County) was a three-year letterman for Camden County High School, which won the 2008 state championship with a 15-0 record. In 41 career games, had 175 tackles, eight interceptions and one touchdown. Named all-region first team as a junior and senior in addition to earning all-state honorable mention recognition as a senior.

Blake Wylie (CB, 5-11, 167, Fort Mill, S.C./Providence Day) earned all-state, all-conference and All-Mecklenburg County honors at Providence Day School in Charlotte. As a senior he had over 900 receiving yards and had seven interceptions as a junior. He also was all-state and all-conference in track and field, setting the school record in the 400 meters.
