STATESBORO, Ga.- The Wofford men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams wrapped up its 2009 campaign over the weekend at the 2009 Southern Conference Track and Field Championships hosted by Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Ga. Carter Blanche paced the Terrier men while freshman Carloine Burdette led the Wofford women.

Blanche, throwing in only his third meet of the spring, posted a distance of 52.78m in the men’s javelin placing him fourth overall in the conference meet giving the Terriers five points in the overall team standings. Also in the men’s javelin, Andy Vess nearly scored points for the Terriers as his finished with a new personal record throw of 51.85m which left him in ninth place and just outside of receiving team points.
In the men’s 400 meter run, Brian Smith finished seventh in the preliminaries setting a new school record with a time of 50.17 qualifying him for the finals. In the finals Smith ran a time of 50.26 finishing once again in the seven spot and picking up two team points for the Terriers.
With a jump of 1.8m, Joe Bailey set a new school record in the men’s high jump.
David Jackson set a new personal record in the men’s 200 meter run preliminaries as he finished with a time of 23.32.
Senior Josh Shumaker finished in the 13th position in the men’s 10,000 meter run with a time of 34:12.25. Josh Riley took 16th in the men’s 10,000 meter run with a time of 36:46.82 while senior Tommy Weber ran a time of 38:07.14 to finish 18th in the same event.
On the women’s side Marissa Kmonicek set a new personal record by over a meter in the women’s javelin throw as she threw a distance of 23.83 meter. Burdette a had a solid meet for the Terriers as she set a new personal record by almost three seconds in the women’s 1500 meter run with a time of 5:08.12 putting her in the 18th position.
The Track teams finished up its 2009 season with one of its best seasons in recent years and showed significant signs of improvement for seasons to come.
