June 11, 2009

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Although the season has ended, the Wofford volleyball team has been busy receiving several academic and athletic awards recently.

At the second annual Bosscars, Wofford’s student-athlete awards ceremony, junior Shanna Hughes took home the biggest honor of the night, winning the Female Student Athlete of the Year award. The GPA Award, given to the student athlete with the highest GPA, was awarded to senior Carolyn Rivers. Rivers was also honored at the Wofford Honors Convocation with the W. Ray Leonard Award, the departmental award for Biology.

Also earning a departmental award was Liz Sheets, who was awarded the award for Intercultural Studies for Business. 2009 marked the first year the departmental award had been given in three years.

Junior Joanna Suddath was awarded the prestigious Coleman Lew Award from the Southern Conference. The award recognizes student-athletes from each of the Southern Conference’s 12 member institutions. Coaches, faculty athletic representatives and senior woman administrators nominate prospective candidates based on leadership, academic excellence and athletic achievement in both the college environment and the community. Athletic directors and representatives from Coleman Lew & Associates conducted one-on-one interviews with the finalists before determining the award winners.

Hughes and Suddath will join six other lettermen returning for the 2009 season. The Terrriers will welcome three newcomers to the squad and will look to improve on their 16-18 overall record in 2008.
