Brandon Waring Selected to Carolina League All-Star Team

FREDERICK, Md. – Former Wofford Terrier baseball player Brandon Waring has been named to the Carolina League All-Star Team. Waring, who is playing first base for the Frederick Keys, is hitting .280 on the season and leads the Keys with nine home runs and 38 RBIs.
The Frederick Keys, a Class-A Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, will send a Carolina League high six players to the 2009 Carolina/California League All Star Game in Lake Elsinore, California, Tuesday, June 23rd. The total equals a franchise high with the 1998 season when the Keys had six all-star participants.
LHP Zach Britton, SS Pedro Florimon, C Caleb Joseph, RHP Luis Lebron, LHP Brian Matusz and 1B Brandon Waring will all represent the Carolina League at The Diamond, home of the Advanced Class-A affiliate for the San Diego Padres, the Lake Elsinore Storm.
Waring, a native of West Columbia, S.C., has overcome a strong crop of first baseman to gain the starting nod. In his first season in the Orioles organization, Waring leads all league first basemen with nine home runs and 38 RBI’s. Waring was acquired in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds this off-season that saw C Ramon Hernandez head to the national league.
At Wofford, Waring helped lead the Terriers to the 2007 Southern Conference Championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. He holds school records for hits in a season (89), runs scored in a season (73), RBI in a season (74) and his 27 home runs in 2007 set a school record and were the second most in the NCAA. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the seventh round in 2007.
