BASEBALL: Finally! Terriers return to Russell C. King for first weekend series in 25 days
The Wofford baseball team returns to the friendly confines of Russell C. King Field for the first Southern Conference home series in 25 days Friday night as they open a weekend set against Elon. Wofford enters the weekend battling for position in the Southern Conference tournament - top 8 schools qualify - to be held in Charleston May 26-30.

In fact, Wofford will host three of the final four series of the season.  Elon will be in town for games Friday night at 7:00 pm, Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm and Sunday at 1:00 pm.  Admission for adults is $5.00. Children's admission is $3.00 on Friday and Sunday.  All kids 12 and under are admitted free on Saturday as part of CJ Compton Plumbing "Super Saturday."  In addition on Saturday, hot dogs are only $1.00 and kids can enjoy the Terrier Tumbler moonbounce weather permitting.  On Sunday, come early for a special treat as the "Melody Makers" from Eden Terrace Retirement Community perform the National Anthem at 1:00 pm.  This weekend's series is presented by Firehouse Subs.

Wofford will host Samford May 7-9 with the same weekend game times and Saturday promotions as noted above.  The Samford series will be North Spartanburg Athletic Association weekend and is presented by Chick-Fil-A of Westside, Hillcrest and Boiling Springs.  The game on Saturday, May 8 is presented by Massage Envy (yes, free massage available!) and will be the annual "TV Theme Song Challenge" game fans test their knowledge of television theme songs from the past throughout the game.  On Mother's Day, May 9, the Wofford baseball team moms will continue the Russell C. King Field tradition of singing "Take me out to the ballgame."

Following a road series at Furman (May 14-16), the Terriers will close out the regular season against Appalachian State at Russell C. King Field May 21-22.  That will be a three-game, two-day series due to Wofford College commencement on May 23.  Friday, May 21 will be 'Salute to Wiffleball' night as the 7-8 year old Holly Springs Bulldogs will take on the 7-8 Hillbrook Jayhawks in a classic game of backyard wiffleball in the lawn beside Russell C. King Field.  The "slowest promotion in America" returns in the annual melting of the Hawaiian Shaved Ice block of ice for the home finale May 22.

MIDDAY MATINEE GAME: Wofford will host the Duke Blue Devils on Wednesday, May 12 at Russell C. King Field.  A game time has not been set, but will be either 2:00 or 3:00 pm.  This game was rescheduled from a rain-out on March 10.  There will be no admission charge for this mid-week midday matinee.

NUMBER(S) OF THE WEEK:  4 and 5

4 - On April 22, Wofford College inducted four student-athletes into Phi Beta Kappa: Joe Fornadel (football), Leland Hollowell (cheerleading), Jordan Rawl (rifle), Kirk Whitehead (golf). Phi Beta Kappa was founded at the College of William and Mary in December 1776. Over the years, the society has evolved from a largely fraternal and forensic organization into one existing primarily to recognize and promote scholastic achievement in the arts and sciences. Phi Beta Kappa chapters are located at research universities with a strong commitment to the liberal arts, and at the nation’s most prestigious undergraduate colleges. South Carolina claims four of the 276 chapters – the University of South Carolina (alpha), Wofford (beta), Furman (gamma) and Clemson (delta).

5 - On April 24, senior third baseman Kyle Behrendt accomplished a feat that as best we can gather has not happened in at least the last 40 years - if ever.  In a 17-9 win at UNC Greensboro, Behrendt went 5-for-5 and hit for the cycle.  He collected a single in the first inning, a double in the 3rd, another single in the 4th (for good measure), homered in the 7th and completed the cycle by tripling in the 8th.  For the season, Behrendt is hitting .394 - good for third on the team behind Mac Doyle (.410) and James Foster (.399).  While he might be 3rd on the team he's 4th in the Southern Conference.  That's right, Doyle, Foster and Behrendt go into Wednesday's game at Gardner-Webb the 2nd, 3rd and 4th top hitters in the conference.
