The Beacon Iced Tea Bowl VI set for Saturday, November 8
History
In 1998, co-owners of The World Famous Beacon Drive-In in Spartanburg, Sam Maw (Wofford graduate) and Steve McManus (graduate of The Citadel) made a friendly wager. The person whose team lost the game would have to don a cheerleading uniform and serve Beacon Iced Tea at the restaurant the following Monday. For the first Iced Tea Bowl, The Citadel won 20-14 and Maw donned the Citadel cheerleading uniform on Monday and the Beacon Iced Tea Bowl was born. It has now become a tradition for every Citadel-Wofford football game in Spartanburg to be dubbed the “Iced Tea Bowl.”
The Iced Tea Bowl returns for its sixth installment with the friendly wagering long-passed, but the spirit of the rivalry between The Citadel and Wofford alive and well. Attached is the commemorative logo for the 2008 contest that will kick-off at 3:00 p.m. and be televised statewide on SportSouth.
Commemorative t-shirts and collectable “Tea Bowl Towels” are now on-sale this fall at the Wofford Sports Marketing office at (864) 597-4110 or (864) 597-4023. T-shirts are $10 and Tea Bowl Towels are $2.
Beacon Iced Tea Bowl VI will actually be an entire week's worth of activities. Below you will find the results from the previous Iced Tea Bowls as well as events leading up to this year's game.
All week, patrons of The Beacon can stop in and register to win a pair of tickets to the game. A winner will be called each day.
Thursday, November 6
At 11:30am, the Wofford cheerleaders will greet Beacon patrons for lunch (until 1:00 p.m.). Lucky patrons can score a “Tea Bowl Towel” just for coming by to eat lunch at The Beacon.
Saturday, November 8
Beginning at 1:00 p.m. fans can stop by “TerrierLand” the interactive kids zone and pick up a free “Tea Bowl Towel” to commemorate the day. Special t-shirts and mini footballs will the thrown into the stands on both the Wofford and Citadel sides of Gibbs Stadium throughout the game.
